Manufacture and form

SiC components are manufactured via solid phase internal (description SSiC) or liquid phase internal (description LPSSiC) from ground sub-µ-SiC very fine powder, which is moved with sinter additives, processed with normal ceramic shaping methods and sintered at 1,900 to 2,200°C under vacuum or inert gas. By using the normal ceramic-shaping method, including a "green process", almost any shape of component is possible.

In addition to fine-grain alternatives in the micron range, coarse grain alternatives with grain sizes up to 1.5 mm are available. Other alternatives can contain a defined closed porosity or graphite as a second phase.

Because of its properties, silicon carbide is a versatile construction material. A few characteristic uses are listed below.

  • Silicon carbide components for dynamic sealing technology with sliding bearings and gas seal rings, as in pumps and drive systems
  • Components in the form of nozzles, for example for sandblasting systems or spray towers
  • Components in the form of wear elements, for example for paper machines
  • Plates for ballistic protection systems
  • Filter systems for oil and gas transport
  • Microreactors for chemical process engineering
